Recent advice from a reliable source indicates that Drs Michael and Jean Atalla who share their time between Tottenham and Tullamore are returning to the UK for good some time in the next couple of months. This will leave not one, but two towns on the Tottenham Branch Line without a GP. Both towns have aging populations and having ready access to medical practitioners is imperative.
Have you ever been as sick as a dog and then be forced to drive over 100kms to the nearest surgery? Well, that is what is in store for hundreds of residents in these two towns if replacement doctors are not found urgently.
If at least one GP can't be found to service the people of Tottenham and Tullamore, the people living in those towns will need access to reliable and comfortable public transport to get to the nearest major centre.
There is a bus that goes once a week from Tottenham to Dubbo, but what if you fall ill on a Thursday or Friday? Could you really wait a week before seeking help? What if its a life-threatening ailment? Would you really want to run the risk of delaying treatment? There is a community car, but what if you can't afford to pay the $45 to use it?
It is self-evident that what is needed is a reliable, DAILY passenger rail service to Parkes. We have the line already in place, we should be using it more efficiently to service the population of the Central West.
Just another reason why access to better public transport is so vital to the people living in the centre of NSW.
