Like so many other small towns, Tottenham is about to lose its only bank. The doors of the NAB shut permanently in two month's time on September 6. It is said that once a town loses its only bank, other businesses will soon follow because it is too difficult to conduct any business without ready access to a bank where large cash deposits and withdrawals can be made. Hopefully the Tottenham businesses will not desert us as we still have a post office where some banking transactions can be conducted and there is always online banking. However, for all those older people who have never learnt how to use online banking, the loss of the NAB could seriously affect their way of life.
And it is not just Tottenham where the lack of a bank is hitting hard - Tullamore has also lost not only its bank but its post office as well. So the people there are even worse off than those in Tottenham.
This is why we need reliable, comfortable and safe public transport so these older people can access a major centre where they can do their banking business whenever they need to. Yes, there is a weekly bus to Dubbo, but it has serious limitations - it is tiny and only holds nine passengers, the seats are cramped and very uncomfortable on long journeys and if you are a taller person there is hardly any leg room between the seats for an adult person to sit comfortably. Also, the day it runs is not necessarily the best day for many potential users. And if you suffer from back or leg problems it is best avoided.
This is why we need better public transport - and a modern passenger train which services ALL the towns along the branch line would be far more sensible than a tiny bus which only services one of the towns once a week. So, please keep sharing this petition as numbers count - do it for your parents, your grandparents and your grandkids because they will all thank you in years to come.
