It's Time for MPs to Pay Their Own Rent and Bills Like the Rest of Us

The Issue

                    Why This Matters:

Right now, MPs in the UK earn £93,904 a year—a salary far higher than most people. On top of that, they claim thousands of pounds in taxpayer-funded expenses for rent, utilities, and office costs. Some MPs even claim rent for second homes, while the rest of us are struggling to pay our own bills.

The problem? MPs make more than enough money to pay their own rent and utilities. They’re getting state-funded perks for their housing, while ordinary people have to cover their own costs—often on much lower wages. If the average worker can’t claim rent and utility expenses, why should MPs?

---

What We Want:

1. MPs should pay their own rent and bills: MPs earn enough to cover their own accommodation and utilities—just like everyone else. We shouldn’t be paying for their second homes while struggling to cover our own costs.

2. MP salaries should be reduced: MPs should not get a six-figure salary and also claim taxpayer-funded rent and utilities. If they get perks like these, their pay should be adjusted.

3. MPs should only claim for necessary work expenses: They should only get reimbursed for actual work-related costs, like travel. No more luxury accommodation or excessive claims that are out of touch with what most people deal with every day.

---

Why This Is Fair:

MPs make plenty of money. They earn £93,904 a year. That’s more than enough to pay for their own accommodation and utilities, just like everyone else. Even after doing so, they’ll still have a comfortable salary—far more than the average person.

This is a benefit system for MPs. MPs are getting state-funded benefits for their rent and utilities—just like some people on welfare. If regular people can’t claim rent and utility costs, why should MPs?

It’s time for change. MPs should understand the struggles everyday people face when paying bills and rent. By requiring MPs to cover their own costs, they’ll be more in touch with the reality of the people they represent.

Saving money for the taxpayer. If MPs paid their own rent and bills, the government would save millions of pounds—money that could be used to support those who truly need help, not politicians living in luxury.

---

Let’s make this change happen!

We work hard for our money, and it’s time MPs do the same. They should pay their own rent and bills like the rest of us, and stop using taxpayer money to fund their second homes.

Sign this petition today and help us hold MPs accountable for how they spend public money. It’s time to make MPs live by the same rules as the rest of us.
