Issue guidance on early retirement for teachers

The Issue

I will turn 55 just 11 months after the state pension age increases from 65 to 67. When I began my teaching career in 1996, female teachers were entitled to retire at 60 with a full state pension. Although the rules changed, I found comfort in the assurance that my teachers' pension would still allow me to retire at 55. Now, after returning to teaching following a 6.5-year break (and therefore being unable to benefit from the McCloud ruling) I find I cannot get information about when I can access my original teachers' pension (55 or 57) as I rejoined the career average scheme.

This situation leaves not only me but countless other dedicated teachers in a state of uncertainty. The government must address the gap between early retirement pensions and the increasing state pension age, especially as retirement age parameters evolve. The rapidly approaching deadline of four years before these changes take effect demands immediate action.

Currently, we lack the guidance needed to adequately plan our retirement finances. It's a looming crisis for many teachers who've dedicated their lives to educating the future, only to find their own futures uncertain. A clear and realistic plan must be communicated by the government to help current and future retirees prepare accordingly.

We are calling on the government to issue specific guidelines that explain how teachers who wish to retire early, in accordance with their final salary pension entitlements, can navigate the new landscape with the state pension age increasing to 67. This crucial information will allow us to make informed decisions for a stable and secure retirement.

Please sign this petition to urge the government to provide the necessary guidance for teachers planning early retirement. Your support can help ensure that those who have shaped minds and futures are afforded the clarity and security they deserve in their later years.
