Irish Rail give the Sligo Greenway the same equality as the Mayo Velorail.

The Issue

In December 2024 Irish Rail withdrew support for the Sligo Greenway on the closed railway from Charlestown/Bellaghy on the Sligo/Mayo border to Collooney county Sligo along the route of the closed railway.  Irish Rail had supported this project and were working in close co-operation with TII and Sligo County Council to make the greenway a reality.  The closed Claremorris-Collooney railway route is not scheduled for re-opening as part of the All Ireland/Island Strategic Rail Review (AISRR).

Irish Rail signed a 12 year lease with Mayo County Council on April 1 2015 releasing 12km of the closed Claremorris-Collooney route for leisure purposes (Velorail).  Why has Irish Rail supported using the closed railway route for leisure purposes in Mayo but is refusing to allow use of the closed railway route in Sligo for leisure purposes?  It would appear to be a decision laden with prejudicial favour towards one project, the Velorail, against another, the Sligo Greenway.

The only thing being asked for is equality and fairness in your actions as a public body.    Re-open this case and give TII and Sligo County Council the same kind of deal given to the Velorail, in Mayo. The Sligo Greenway wants equality.  No more. No less.
