Investigate Former Pres. George W. Bush for Torture

Investigate Former Pres. George W. Bush for Torture

The Issue

With this week's release of former President George W. Bush's memoir, Decision Points, in which he admits to ordering waterboarding (widely considered then and now to be a form of torture), pressure is mounting on President Barack Obama to order an investigation of the former President for torture.

This week, Amnesty International, the ACLU, and Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) have joined in a loose coalition of groups calling on the Obama administration to launch an investigation.

In his book, Bush writes that he was asked by the Central Intelligence Agency whether he would support the agency's use of waterboarding against particular suspects. "Damn right," Bush admits to telling the CIA.

In their recent letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, the ACLU noted that, "The Department of Justice has made clear that waterboarding is torture and, as such, a crime under the federal anti-torture statute."
