Introduce location-based priority in nursery admissions in East Lothian

As a parent, there’s little as daunting as sending your child off to nursery, but the process becomes even more distressing when faced with unnecessary hurdles in admission processes. My personal story perfectly encapsulates the plight many parents face in East Lothian. Despite living just a minute's walk from our local nursery, my son was inexplicably denied a spot. This experience is not only emotionally taxing but also logistically complicated for families who must then navigate alternatives that can be miles away.

The impending inevitability that my younger son will likely encounter the same issue as he approaches nursery age has propelled me into action. This issue amplifies inconvenience, distress, and challenges for numerous families in our area. Our local nurseries should prioritize children based on their proximity to ensure the sense of community and local integration that is so crucial during early childhood.

East Lothian Council's current admission policy predominantly adheres to other factors rather than location proximity, inadvertently affecting community cohesion and parental peace of mind. Studies have shown that children benefit vastly from community-based learning environments, fostering early friendships and a sense of belonging. By implementing location-based priority, not only will we facilitate a smoother transition for our children, but we will also encourage sustainable local community engagement and reduce unnecessary commuter emissions.

The solution is both simple and effective: amend the admission policy to include distance from nursery as a primary factor in the allocation process. Many councils across the UK have successfully integrated similar policies, resulting in positive outcomes for both children and their families.

I urge East Lothian Council to review and update the admissions criteria to include location-based priority for nursery admissions. Let us work together to ensure our little ones can access early education close to home, building strong, local communities for future generations.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a fairer and more community-focused nursery admission process in East Lothian. Your support will help us bring about meaningful change that puts our children’s needs first.
