Install suicide prevention barriers on bridges

The Issue

In memory of my beloved daughter, who recently took her own life by jumping off a bridge crossing the Menai Straits, I am calling for immediate action to install suicide prevention barriers on both of these critical bridges. This is not just about honouring her memory, but also about protecting others from suffering the same fate. My heartache is profound, but if even one life can be saved from this action, then her death will not have been in vain.

The Menai Strait bridges, which connect the island of Anglesey to mainland Wales, are not only vital transport links but also tragically common locations for those in desperate need of help and intervention. Statistics show that erecting physical barriers on bridges can reduce suicide rates by up to 86%, according to a study published in The British Journal of Psychiatry. These barriers serve as a psychological, as well as a physical deterrent, buying crucial time for those experiencing crisis, allowing opportunities for rescue and intervention.

Every life is precious. In our community, we cannot sit idly by as more families might suffer the profound sense of loss and endless questions like my own. The cost of installing such preventative measures is far outweighed by the value of human lives they have the potential to save.

I urge our local councils, as well as Welsh government officials, to prioritise the installation of these barriers. Not only will this act of compassion signal to those who are struggling that their lives matter, but it will also reflect our community’s commitment to safeguarding all its members.

Please lend your support by signing this petition. Together, we can make a tangible difference, saving not just lives but also weaving a tighter fabric of safety and care in Anglesey and beyond. This is our chance to stand together and prevent further tragedies from occurring.
