Install speed cameras and safety measures on Wigan Road, Bolton

Install speed cameras and safety measures on Wigan Road, Bolton
The Issue
We are calling on Bolton Council and Greater Manchester Police to urgently install speed cameras and appropriate road safety measures on Wigan Road, Bolton following repeated serious accidents and the tragic loss of life.
Over the past five years, there have been dozens of road traffic accidents on Wigan Road, many of which local residents have repeatedly raised with the council. Despite ongoing concerns about speeding, dangerous driving, and lack of enforcement, no effective preventative action has been taken.
On Sunday 11th January, this failure had devastating consequences when four people were killed and five others were seriously injured in a single collision. This tragedy has left families grieving, individuals seriously harmed, and the wider community traumatised — and it was not unforeseeable.
Residents who live along and near Wigan Road have long warned that excessive speed and poor compliance with limits make this road extremely dangerous. Temporary signage and reactive statements are not enough. Lives have been lost and others permanently affected.
We therefore call on Bolton Council and the relevant authorities to:
- Install average speed cameras on Wigan Road as a matter of urgency.
- Increase active speed enforcement, including mobile speed cameras, immediately.
- Conduct a full road safety review of Wigan Road.
- Implement traffic-calming measures where necessary.
- Provide transparency on why previous warnings and accident data did not lead to action.
This petition is not about blame — it is about preventing the next tragedy. No family should have to lose a loved one, and no one should be seriously injured, before meaningful safety measures are introduced.
We urge the council and authorities to listen to residents, act decisively, and make Wigan Road safe for everyone who uses it.
