Install signage to promote awareness of bouldering history & positive ethics @ White Rock
The issue
"Bouldering" rock climbing without fixed metal protection in the rock- has been a prominent part of the history of White Rock Conservation Park since the 1980s. Just like surfing on the whole east coast, climbing in nature in the foothills, and peaks.
Over decades, the sport has provided not only recreation and adventure for climbers, but also a meaningful connection to nature, community, physical wellbeing, and local culture. For many people, especially teens navigating difficult circumstances in life, outdoor sport and climbing can offer confidence, belonging, resilience, mentorship, and a positive outlet that strongly supports mental health and wellbeing.
Ipswich City Council, Australian Climbing Association Queensland (ACA QLD) alongside "QLD Bouldering", and importantly the Traditional Owners and Indigenous land managers of the area, need to collaborate to honour and share this rich history through the installation of educational signage at the entrance to the park, particularly within the main car park area.
Such signage could tell the story of bouldering at White Rock, while also recognising the deep cultural significance of the land and the importance of respectful partnership and stewardship alongside Indigenous land managers.
This signage would not only celebrate the long-standing history of climbing in the area, but also promote positive ethics, education, and respectful behaviour for new generations of climbers and visitors. As the popularity of bouldering continues to grow, it is essential that the sport develops in harmony with conservation values, cultural heritage, and community expectations.
Installing informative signage would serve several important purposes: educating the public about the history and significance of bouldering at White Rock;
- reinforcing environmental and cultural respect; and introducing ethical climbing practices to new participants. This is particularly important as outdoor sport continues to play an increasingly valuable role in supporting mental health, social connection, and youth engagement.
- Access to healthy outdoor recreation can have a transformative effect on troubled youth, offering discipline, self-esteem, and a sense of purpose through connection with nature and community.
In addition to historical context, the signage should include clear climbing ethics and guidelines that encourage sustainable behaviour, minimise environmental impact, and foster positive relationships between climbers, park users, Council, and Indigenous land managers. Education and collaboration are key to ensuring the conservation park remains protected and respected for future generations.
By taking this important step forward, Ipswich City Council, ACA QLD, QLD Bouldering, and Indigenous land managers would not only honour the legacy of bouldering at White Rock, but also help future-proof the sport through education, inclusion, and stewardship. This initiative could position Ipswich as a leader in ethical outdoor recreation management- demonstrating a strong commitment to cultural respect, environmental preservation, youth wellbeing, and community health.
Join us in encouraging Ipswich City Council to support this valuable enhancement to White Rock Conservation Park.
Your signature can help ensure that the history, ethics, cultural respect, and future of bouldering are celebrated and preserved- while also supporting the positive role outdoor sport plays in mental health, youth development, and community wellbeing. Please sign this petition to support this meaningful cause.
