Install security cameras or garden to stop illegal dumping in Bulli.
The issue
I have personally removed used and uncapped syringes 3 times in the past month!
Ongoing illegal rubbish dumping, discarded used syringes and other drug paraphernalia have become an alarming biohazard in our community, creating a serious safety and sanitation threat for residents, visitors, and local wildlife on Lawrence Street in Bulli. The communal area and sidewalk, have turned into an unsafe zone often needed to be avoided due to these unsightly and dangerous materials.
The spot where rubbish is dumped will be cleaned but within a short amount of time, the pile is back again. Once one person dumps rubbish, it encourages others to as well.
As a resident deeply concerned about the well-being of the community. Parents are worried about letting their children play outside, joggers are cautious while running on the footpath and pet owners fear walking their dogs on the footpath. This problem extends beyond aesthetic concerns; it poses real health risks.
Security cameras have been proven effective in deterring illegal activities and identifying offenders, thereby reducing occurrences of littering and unlawful syringe disposals.
We are reaching out to Homes NSW and the local council with a solution that aims to restore the cleanliness and safety of our community spaces:
In addition to a camera, a basic garden of trees and shrubs in that spot to not allow a space for rubbish to be dumped.
While the upfront costs may seem significant, the long-term benefits in reducing clean-up expenses, enhancing public safety, and improving community welfare far outweigh these initial investments. Not only would these measures deter future illegal dumping, but they would also foster a reclaiming of safe spaces for our families and community members.
Join us in urging Homes NSW and the Wollongong City Council to take immediate action. Sign this petition and help us ensure that our community remains a safe, clean, and beautiful place for everyone! Together, we can make a real difference and drive meaningful change in our neighbourhood.
