The Issue

Every day, thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, visitors, and community members cross Linda Vista Road to access the University of San Diego campus, nearby housing, public transportation, and surrounding neighborhoods. One of the busiest pedestrian routes is located adjacent to the University of San Diego School of Law, where many people cross Linda Vista Road despite the absence of a marked crosswalk. In 2016, the City of San Diego identified this corridor as a priority for pedestrian safety improvements through the Linda Vista Comprehensive Active Transportation Strategy, recommending that a pedestrian crossing with a pedestrian-activated beacon be evaluated near the USD School of Law. Nearly a decade later, that recommendation has not been implemented. Following the tragic loss of a University of San Diego student while crossing Linda Vista Road, members of the USD community conducted a pedestrian safety survey to better understand current conditions. The survey found that more than 70% of respondents cross Linda Vista Road at least once each week, 68.6% have experienced a near miss or felt unsafe while crossing, and 94.1% support additional pedestrian safety improvements. Our Request We respectfully urge the City of San Diego to: * Conduct an updated engineering evaluation of Linda Vista Road adjacent to the University of San Diego School of Law. * Install a high-visibility pedestrian crossing behind the USD School of Law, within the segment between Mildred Street and Via Las Cumbres, to provide a safe and convenient crossing location. * Improve street lighting and install illuminated pedestrian crossing features along Linda Vista Road to increase nighttime visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. * Work collaboratively with the University of San Diego and the Linda Vista community to prioritize and implement these safety improvements. Pedestrian safety should never depend on taking unnecessary risks to reach campus, public transportation, or nearby housing. By signing this petition, you are supporting practical, evidence-based improvements that can help prevent future tragedies and create a safer Linda Vista Road for everyone.
