The issue

In recent times, at Lake Hugh Muntz, we have witnessed the brutal savaging of two young adult black swans by dogs that were illegally let off-leash. Both incidents involved swans with new cygnets, and yet offenders persist in their reckless disregard for wildlife, knowing that they cannot be identified or prosecuted. These perpetrators go so far as to take their dogs swimming off-leash in the lake, just meters away from imperiled wildlife.

The serene environment of our public parks and waterways, meant to be a safe haven for both humans and native species, is being marred by the careless actions of a few irresponsible individuals. It’s not just native wildlife suffering from these lawless actions. Just today, there was a swan victimized by such negligence. Tomorrow, it could be a child.

Currently, a staggering eight calls a day, totaling 3,000 yearly, are made to wildlife rescue due to the injuries inflicted by such negligence, often leading to brutal deaths, and frequently impacting nursing mothers. With the installation of CCTVs and the employment of park rangers, we can ensure that those who flout the rules and endanger lives are caught and prosecuted. This proactive step will serve as a powerful deterrent against illegal acts, safeguarding not just the wildlife but also the families and children who enjoy these public spaces.

The need for actionable solutions is critical. Surveillance and monitoring systems are essential to deter and identify offenders. By adding cameras and employing rangers, we augment the safety of these environments, ensuring they remain a sanctuary for both wildlife and the public.

We urge the local authorities to take immediate action by installing CCTVs and ensuring park rangers are present in these vulnerable areas. With your support, we can protect our cherished local wildlife, prevent future injuries, and maintain the peaceful enjoyment of these natural spaces. Sign this petition to demand better safety measures for our public parks and waterways. Your voice can make a real difference.
