The Issue

Living in Newmarket, we're no strangers to the chaos that ensues every time there's an accident on the A14 between Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds. Our town's High Street becomes overwhelmed with diverted traffic, causing massive delays that disrupt our lives. Missing crucial doctor appointments, arriving late for work and school – these are just a few of the daily inconveniences we face due to the lack of adequate safety measures on this critical stretch.

The Newmarket junction is notorious. There's at least one accident a week, turning our peaceful town into a congested nightmare, putting immense strain on infrastructure not built to handle such loads. The National Highway needs to prioritize the installation of Average Speed cameras on both the East and West lanes of the A14 to ensure safer roads for everyone.

Average Speed cameras have been proven to reduce accidents significantly. According to a report by the Department for Transport, areas with these cameras show a 25-40% reduction in collision rates. Implementing this solution on our stretch of road would mean not only fewer accidents but also a more reliable flow of traffic, reducing the likelihood of Town centre standstills.

The beauty of Newmarket should remain a haven, not a traffic diversion nightmare. Our local economy and daily lives are suffering because of the avoidable congestion. By emphasizing road safety, the National Highway can make a tangible difference to thousands of lives.

Urge them to take action now and install Average Speed cameras on the A14. Sign the petition and help keep our roads safe.
