The Issue
Every time I drive down the local 20 mph road in my neighborhood, my heart sinks a little. It's not uncommon to see the aftermath of a tragic accident involving our local wildlife. Seeing roadkill on this relatively slow-paced roadway shouldn't be something we come to expect or tolerate. These unfortunate incidents happen way too often, and something needs to be done.
The solution is simple and straightforward: install an animal crossing sign on this road. Roads with speeds even as low as 20 mph can be dangerous for animals, especially if drivers aren't anticipating their presence. With clear signage, we can alert drivers to the potential of crossing animals and encourage them to be more vigilant, thus significantly reducing the number of animals injured or killed.
Evidence from various studies shows that the implementation of road signs dedicated to animal crossings can markedly decrease wildlife fatalities. Research suggests that animal crossing signs can increase driver awareness and reduce collisions by up to 50%, proving that a small change can have a big impact.
As much of the local area is surrounded by natural habitat, animals crossing roads cannot be avoided. However, the level of safety can definitely be improved for both animals and drivers. Our community deserves a proactive approach, and installing a crossing sign is a tangible and effective step in protecting our local wildlife.
We urge the local council and road authorities to prioritize the safety of our wildlife and install an animal crossing sign on this road. It's a simple, cost-effective solution that can save the lives of countless animals and spare the community from the distress of witnessing these accidents.
Sign this petition to support safer roads for our community's wildlife. Let us show that we care about the lives of all beings in our neighborhood.
