The issue

A critical stretch of Victoria Road between Birriga Road and Bundarra Road in Bellevue Hill (Bellevue Hill Public School Zone) has long been an immediate safety hazard for our community. Every single workday, residents face a dangerous paradox: gridlock and bumper-to-bumper traffic stalling in one direction, while vehicles travel at high speeds in the opposite direction.
Currently, there is no safe, accessible infrastructure to cross this section of Victoria Road. The only alternative requires pedestrians to descend four flights worth of steep  hill, resulting in an arduous 7-minute detour. This is not a viable option for vulnerable community members. Nor does it seem to be a preferred option for kids rushing to school.
The Impact:
Every day, we witness a high volume of foot traffic risking their safety to navigate this crossing. This includes:
School Children: Crossing early in the morning and afternoon to catch local school buses and on their way to BHPS.
Elderly Residents: Accessing nearby local shops and bus stops.
Parents with Prams: Trying to reach the neighborhood parks on the opposite side of the road.
With the ongoing construction and completion of new apartment blocks in the immediate area, both pedestrian volume and traffic flow continue to escalate. "Near misses" have become a daily occurrence. If infrastructure does not keep pace with development, it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian is seriously injured or killed. We should not wait for a tragedy to occur before taking action.
Our Proposal:
We, the undersigned residents and visitors of Bellevue Hill, formally petition Woollahra Municipal Council and its engineering department to proactively intervene.
We urgently request the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing (a "Wombat crossing" combining speed humps and a zebra crossing) to naturally calm speeding traffic and provide safe passage across 4 lane traffic. A highly suitable location for this infrastructure is the direct corridor between 159 and 174 Victoria Road.
