The intersection of Glenella–Richmond Road and Holts Road in Mackay has become a well-known point of confusion and potential danger for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

The current layout is unconventional and often misunderstood, creating uncertainty and increasing the risk of incidents.
As the originator of this petition, I want to acknowledge—with genuine respect—any families, friends and emergency service responders who may have experienced trauma or loss at this location. This petition is not based on any specific incident findings, but on a shared community concern and a desire to prevent future harm.

This intersection is widely recognized as difficult to navigate due to its misalignment. One would call it a staggered intersection. In my opinion there is no consistency with how each motorist navigates this intersection. 

Some people indicate right then left and others don’t indicate to travel straight ahead, when crossing Holts road to continue on to Glenella Richmond Road.

This inconsistency leads to hesitation, misinterpretation and unsafe assumptions between road users. 

A roundabout offers a practical, proven solution. It simplifies traffic movements, improves predictability and significantly reduces crash severity. Evidence shows roundabouts can reduce serious injury crashes by up to 75%, while also improving traffic flow.

Traffic volumes at this location have increased notably, with many motorists using this route to avoid congestion on Mackay–Bucasia Road and to access the Mackay Ring Road. The current design is no longer suited to the level of use.

If required, I am willing to assist in gathering on-site observations to support this case.
Beyond safety, improving this intersection supports our broader community—reducing delays, improving freight movement, and preparing our road network for continued regional growth.

We understand that infrastructure upgrades require planning and investment, but the long-term benefits to safety and efficiency far outweigh the cost. This is a reasonable, proactive step to address a known issue.
We cannot normalise a layout that continues to create confusion and risk.

I am calling on the Mackay Regional Council and relevant transport authorities to prioritise the installation of a roundabout at this intersection.
