The intersection of Glenella Richmond Road and Holts Road in Mackay, Queensland, has become a notorious site for confusion and potential danger for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Due to the current setup, navigating this junction can be perplexing, and to misunderstandings for motorists. This issue is very important to our entire community in preventing any further close calls, minor accidents & tragically, fatalities. As the petition originator, I wish to express my deep respect to all Families, Friends & Emergency Service responders, that may have experienced trauma and or hurt at this location of concern. In addition the points detailed in this petition are in no way results from any accident investigation findings. The aim for the petition is to gain traction toward a positive solution. 

Our community deserves roads that facilitate safe and efficient travel, which is why we are calling on the Mackay Regional Council and relevant transport authorities to take swift action by installing a roundabout at this critical location.

This intersection is widely recognised within the community as confusing and potentially dangerous due to its misalignment. Drivers travelling straight along Glenella Richmond Road are often required to indicate right and then immediately left to continue forward, creating uncertainty for other road users. Other road users do not indicate and travel straight across Holts road. This unconventional movement leads to frequent misinterpretation, hesitation, and unsafe assumptions by motorists.

Roundabouts are proven to significantly enhance road safety by reducing conflict points that lead to crashes and improving traffic flow efficiency. Data from the Australian Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development indicate a reduction in serious injury crashes by up to 75% when converting traditional intersections into roundabouts. Additionally, roundabouts provide a more predictable traffic pattern that can prevent the confusion and sudden stops currently plaguing this intersection.

Traffic volume at this intersection has also increased significantly. Many motorists now use Glenella Richmond Road as an alternative route to avoid congestion on Mackay Bucasia Road during peak periods. Additionally, this route is heavily utilized by drivers traveling between the Northern Beaches and the Mackay Ring Road, further compounding traffic flow and safety risks.

Implementing a roundabout is not just a matter of safety, but it also contributes to the local economy by improving transport links within our community. Smooth traffic flow aids in timely deliveries for businesses and reduces the commute time for workers. Furthermore, given Mackay's status as a growing regional hub, enhancing our infrastructure to support future growth is essential.

We understand that implementing a roundabout will require financial resources and planning, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial investments. Funding could be sought from state government grants aimed at improving regional transport infrastructure or through collaborations with local businesses interested in sponsoring public safety initiatives.

It is imperative that the Mackay Regional Council and transport authorities consider this proposal seriously and take action to make our roads safer for everyone.
