Our community in Greenville, NC faces a silent crisis - the handling of sexual assault cases lacks the rigor and thoroughness necessary to deliver justice. Victims of sexual assault often carry the heavy burden of trauma, fear, and stigma. Yet, confidence in the investigation process remains lackluster. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), only 230 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to police, which means about 3 out of 4 go unreported. We seek to convince local authorities to step up efforts, improve investigative methods, and increase support for victims of sexual assault. A significant part of this petition is requesting greater transparency, heightened attention to detail, and all-encompassing investigative processes. Enhanced methods will not only aid in bringing perpetrators to account but also promote faith in the system.
