The Issue

With the announcement of the new Beachlands South Development, our Local Board and Councillors have confirmed that there will be no upgrades to Whitford Road or Whitford–Maraetai Road until 3,000 new sections have been developed.

That is 3,000 new households — meaning potentially 6,000 additional cars — being added to a corridor that is already at full capacity, without any roading upgrades, plans, or commitments in place.

This is unacceptable.

Our roads cannot handle current volumes, let alone the pressure from major developments. We cannot afford another five years of inaction from Local Government, Central Government, Auckland Transport, or the Local Board.

The Whitford, Beachlands, and Maraetai communities need to stand up together and say enough is enough. We deserve safe, reliable, future-proofed transport infrastructure — not delays, excuses, and empty promises.

Please help us show that we want action, not words.

Following the petition, we are calling for the following commitments:
1. Proper refurbishment of Whitford Road & Whitford–Maraetai Road:
Full structural upgrades, not quick patch-ups or low-quality repairs.
Any subcontractor delivering sub-standard work must not be re-engaged.
Repairs must be long-lasting, safe, and compliant with best-practice standards.
2. A clear and funded timeline for the Whitford Bypass:
A proper bypass route from Sandstone Road to Beachlands.
Planning, design, and early works to begin within five years, minimum.
Transparency from AT and Council on staging, costings, and timeframes.
3. Infrastructure-first development policy:
Any further development in Whitford, Maraetai, Clevedon, or Franklin must include a clear, funded roading plan before construction begins.
No more developments approved without properly considering transport capacity.
4. Safe, accessible public transport options:
Provide real alternatives for residents of Whitford Road and Whitford–Maraetai Road.
Implement reliable bus services with safe stops, frequent scheduling, and proper connections.
Commit to long-term improvements, not temporary trials that are later cancelled.

Our residents pay some of the highest rates in Auckland, and it is completely unfair that we have some of the worst infrastructure.
