Indigenous People's Day at Adelphi University

Indigenous People's Day at Adelphi University
Why this petition matters

Instead of formally recognizing Indigenous People's Day, Adelphi University's Academic Calendar lists October 10th as our "Mini-Fall Break". While it is a relief that this day is no longer referred to as Columbus Day, we as members of the Adelphi Community urge this institution not only to stop commemorating those responsible for the genocide, marginalization, and colonization of Indigenous Americans, but also to honor and uphold those Indigenous Americans on their National holiday. This university prides itself on diversity and inclusivity but has yet to make a significant effort in uplifting the Native American community. We are signing this petition in the hopes that the university (1) changes its official calendar to include Indigenous People's Day, (2) shows a more outward appreciation for Native American heritage and culture, and (3) more outwardly denounces the harm caused by colonization.
