Indiana Home/Business Energy Storage With or Without Solar Back Up Tax Credit
The Issue
Topic: Incentive For Home/Business Energy Storage With or Without Solar Back Up Tax Credit
Given the recent severe storms that our state has been experiencing and the extended
amounts of multiple day blackouts we Hoosiers are now enduring, I pose this state
incentive to help ease some of the stress both emotional and financial on Hoosiers:
Have Indiana supply a tax credit up to 5,000 dollars per structure for a home battery storage system.
Home battery storage systems are becoming mainstream in many parts of the world.
They can supply multiple services such as: supply emergency back-up power during
black out events, they can store extra solar energy for homes with solar that can then
be used during low solar days and nighttime, or sell back to utilities and they help
stabilize the grid during peak load times. Since Indiana is a non-net metering state,
allowing Hoosiers to keep the power their home produces to use at a later time makes
excellent financial sense.
These ever-increasing severe weather events are putting greater strains on
our power grids. Energy monopolies are falling behind on critical infrastructure
upgrades. Additionally, productivity is lost when businesses must close and remote
workers are unable to join the workforce virtually.
The people of Indiana need immediate and long-lasting protections. This proposal
would be a good first step. Not every house is solar compatible, but all houses and
other places of business would benefit from individual energy storage.
Given our state’s budget surplus, this would be a worthwhile investment. Unlike
suspending gas taxes, which only encourages and prolongs our addiction to fossil fuels,
this would help put people on a more sustainable energy path. One could even see
Indiana investing in more battery building capability, ultimately creating more Hoosier
jobs.
It will include:
1.Equipment qualifications for the tax credit (EX: must be UL listed, minimum 2,500 watt AC output, minimum 4.8 KW energy storage , recommended DIY kits or reliable solar installers. We want people to purchase systems that are of excellent quality and will power their emergency needs at the bare minimum.
2. It will include equipment and labor costs that the credit can be used towards. EX: Complete Portable Battery Back Up Systems, Batteries, Solar Panels, Conductors, Transfer Switches, Conduit, Racking, Solar Generators, Beakers/Fuses, Balcony Solar Units (When made legal in Indiana) and Installation Costs,
3. Another $1,500 when using at least 20 percent of components listed in line 2 that are made in Indiana and/or using licensed Solar Installation Companies Based in Indiana.
4. Will include refundable tax credits to ensure that households with no tax liability can also benefit from the tax credit.
5. Make it Reto active for the full 2026 year. It would expire in 2030.
Thank-you for your time and consideration in this matter.
Respectfully,
