The United Kingdom used to be the most powerful country in the world. It is essential for Britain to have a strong military for many reasons, but ultimately:

A strong military keeps our country safe.

We currently spend 2.4% of GDP on Defence. This is nowhere near enough.

Currently, the UK is 6th in the world for money spent on defence anually:

1. USA (£706bn)

2. China (£248bn)

3. Russia (£140bn)

4. Germany (£84bn)

5. India (£68bn)

6. United Kingdom (£65bn)

Allowing hostile states like Russia to spend more than double what we spend on defence is reckless. Remember, this 65 billion is only 2.4% of GDP - we have another 97.6%.

The Government have aspired to raise the defence spending to 2.7% by 2028. This is a small increase over a long period of time. We need a large increase now.

2.7% = £73bn. That is still woefully behind other countries.

If we increase to 15%, we will be spending £406bn, leaving us only behind the USA, and we will be in a far better position to defend our country.

 

We call on the UK Government to increase defence spending to 15% of GDP by the end of 2027.
