The cost of living in Ontario is steadily rising, making it increasingly difficult for individuals on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) to meet their basic needs. As of 2021, the maximum monthly payment for a single person with no dependents is $1,169. However, according to Statistics Canada, the average monthly rent alone in Toronto was $1,374 as of October 2020. This discrepancy between ODSP payments and living costs leaves many vulnerable individuals struggling to afford necessities like food, housing, and medication.

 Therefore, we urge the Government of Ontario to increase ODSP monthly payments in order to accommodate for these increasing costs of living within our province. We believe that everyone deserves a fair chance at a decent life regardless of their physical or mental capabilities.

 As Mental Health and Addiction students we will be working with members of the community who are directly affected by the current inadequate amount of support from the program. Within community and social services, it is important to us to ensure that individuals are able to live a fulfilling life and are advocated for when they cannot advocate for themselves.
