Women in Brampton and the Peel Region deserve to live free from violence and abuse. However, due to limited funding and resources, local women's shelters struggle to provide the necessary support to survivors of domestic abuse. Increasing funding and support for these shelters to ensure they can meet the growing demand and offer comprehensive services to all women and children in need is crucial.

Each year, thousands of women and children seek refuge in these shelters, fleeing dangerous home environments. Yet, many are turned away due to the lack of space and resources. According to the Canadian Women's Foundation, on any given night, 3,491 women and their 2,724 children sleep in shelters because it isn't safe at home. This growing demand overwhelms the current capacity of shelters in Brampton and Peel Region, further highlighting the urgent need for additional funding and support.

Additional funding would allow shelters to expand their capacity, hire more staff, and offer a broader range of services, including counselling, legal assistance, and job training programs. This support is essential in helping survivors rebuild their lives and regain independence. Moreover, funding can be utilized for public awareness campaigns to educate the community about domestic violence and available resources, potentially preventing future abuse.

We call on the provincial and local governments to prioritize women's safety by increasing budget allocations to these vital services. By investing in women's shelters, we can create safer communities and offer a lifeline to those in desperate need.
