Increase frequency of grass cutting in Calcot to protect dogs
The Issue
As a devoted dog owner in West Berkshire, I am deeply concerned about the conditions of the grass verges in Calcot. The overgrown grass, currently taller than many dogs, presents a serious problem for our beloved pets. It's not just about aesthetics or convenience—these towering verges are causing an increase in veterinary visits due to incidents with wall barley, also known as flea darts. These seeds attach to dogs' fur, become embedded in paws, ears, and noses, and can lead to painful injuries and significant vet bills.
Many dog owners in the area, myself included, have faced the distressing sight of our pets in pain. It’s heart-wrenching to see them suffer, knowing that this situation is preventable. Over recent months, the number of dogs needing medical attention due to these invasive grasses has risen alarmingly. Our dogs should be able to enjoy their walks without coming home injured.
Furthermore, the current state of the grass verges makes it impossible to safely walk dogs or pick up after them, posing a health and hygiene risk to the community. Furthermore, whilst the decision to cut the verges less frequently is deemed beneficial for biodiversity and wildlife it can also be seen as diregarding the safety of our pets and the wishes of local residents who value responsible dog ownership.
To mitigate these issues, we are calling on the West Berkshire Council to implement more frequent verge mowing schedules specifically in the Calcot area, specifically in the summer months. Regular maintenance will prevent grasses from reaching dangerous heights and ensure that public walkways are safe and welcoming for all.
Dog owners and our beloved companions rely on the council to maintain these public spaces responsibly. By signing this petition, you are not just advocating for the safety and well-being of our pets, but also for a community that cherishes its natural environment while maintaining it in a way that is accessible and safe for all. Sign now to help make Calcot's green spaces safe for our four-legged friends and the people who love them.
