Increase fencing on the new Delhi–Dehradun Expressway to prevent animal fatalities
The Issue
During a recent drive on the highway, In the PHASE 2 part of the highway which is a straight, extremely fast corridor of 118 km, I was struck by the sheer number of animal fatalities I witnessed. As someone who cherishes my dog and considers him a beloved family member, the sight was heartbreaking. I counted approximately 30–40 incidents of animals, including stray dogs and jackals, that had been mowed down in just one direction of the road. I shudder to think of what the numbers might be when both sides are combined.
This disturbing phenomenon is happening because of gaps in the lower sections of the fencing along the expressway, allowing animals to inadvertently wander onto the fast-paced highway. Once on the road, these creatures have little chance against speeding vehicles, and such tragic fates are the consequence.
This situation is not only distressing but also preventable. Implementing sturdy and continuous fencing along the entire stretch of the expressway can stop animals from accessing the road. Such measures have been successfully employed in other regions and have proven effective in dramatically reducing animal fatalities. Studies have shown that well-maintained fencing can decrease roadkill incidents by up to 90%, providing a life-saving barrier between wildlife and vehicular traffic.
It's imperative that highway authorities take immediate action to address this issue. By investing in quality fencing and regular maintenance, we can protect countless animals from senseless deaths. Doing so will not only preserve local wildlife but also enhance road safety for motorists, who may otherwise face danger from sudden animal crossings.
Let's stand united for the cause and advocate for the protection of these innocent creatures. Urge the responsible authorities to take decisive action now. With your support, together we can push for safer highways for animals and humans alike.
Please sign this petition and help us make a difference for our four-legged friends and the safety of all travelers on the road.
