Increase Disability Housing for Families - Ensure Accessibility and Inclusion
The Issue
I, Natalie anderson, am writing this petition to address a pressing issue that affects not only me but numerous families with disabilities across our community. It is disheartening to witness the lack of accessible housing options available for individuals and families with disabilities. We urgently need your support to advocate for the construction of more disability-friendly homes, specifically those with three or four bedrooms. Family homes.
As someone who faces daily challenges due to my disability, I understand firsthand how crucial it is to have a home that accommodates our unique needs. Unfortunately, in the past six years, there has been an alarming scarcity of suitable disability housing options in our area. To my knowledge, only two or three-bedroom houses have been built during this time frame. In my area .
Even more distressing is the fact that many of these newly constructed houses are too small to navigate comfortably in a wheelchair. Builders have often had to return and modify layouts after completion due to inadequate planning and consideration for accessibility requirements. This not only causes unnecessary delays but also adds significant financial burdens on both builders and homeowners.
Moreover, it is disheartening that local housing authorities (H.A) have refused requests from families like mine seeking adaptations or modifications in existing houses. This denial further restricts our ability to live independently and hampers our pursuit of a normal life. even no grants are provided to help make adaptions.
To rectify this situation and ensure equal opportunities for all members of society, we call upon relevant authorities:
1. Increase the construction of disability-friendly homes: We urge local governments and developers to prioritize building more three or four-bedroom houses designed specifically with accessibility features such as wider doorways, ramps, roll-in showers/baths, adjustable countertops/sinks within reach range.
2. Encourage collaboration between builders/architects: Authorities should promote partnerships between builders/architects specializing in accessible design principles and incorporate their expertise into new housing projects. This collaboration will ensure that homes are constructed with the necessary features from the outset, eliminating the need for costly modifications later on.
3. making sure it is social /affordable housing .That gardens are level access and big enough .Rooms are big enough to move a wheelchair around, aswell space for bed and furniture to go in which most of these properties lack .making sure the builders are sticking to the plans. adequate space for wheelchairs, mobility, scooters sticks mobility needs to be stored. sensory spaces for people with sensory needs.
4. Raise awareness and educate landlords: It is crucial to raise awareness among landlords about their responsibility in providing accessible housing options. Authorities should implement educational programs that inform landlords about the benefits of adapting their properties and provide guidance on available resources or funding opportunities.
By signing this petition, we stand together as a community advocating for change. We believe that every individual, regardless of ability, deserves a home where they can live independently and comfortably with their families. Let us work towards creating an inclusive society where disability is not a barrier but an opportunity for growth and understanding.
