For our social studies assessment, we are advocating for a change in the policy around the school lunch programme in New Zealand. Currently, only 25% of students benefit from this essential service. This is not enough to address the growing issue of child hunger and food insecurity in our schools. By increasing coverage to 50% of students, we can ensure that more children have access to nutritious meals, which is crucial for their academic performance and overall well-being.

According to UNICEF, one in five children in New Zealand lives in poverty. Expanding the school lunch programme would be a significant step towards alleviating this issue and supporting families who struggle to provide daily meals for their kids.
