Increase Awareness and Information on SUDEP to Prevent Epilepsy Deaths

The Issue

My son Jordan was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2012 when he was just a boy of 13yearsold. He was subjected to multiple medical treatments and endless consultations - all characterized by a trial and error approach. Despite these efforts, I was never informed about SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). Jordan tragically passed away in his sleep, two weeks shy of his 14th birthday, in May 2014.

What haunts me till date is the lack of awareness and ignorance towards SUDEP. SUDEP is the leading cause of death in patients with epilepsy, affecting 1 in 1,000 adults and 1 in 4,500 children each year ("Mortality in Epilepsy," Epilepsy Foundation, 2012). Yet it's rarely spoken about or addressed in consultations and public healthcare information.

The lack of knowledge about SUDEP is not just our story. Thousands of families suffer in silence, grappling with the reality of epilepsy and its potential fatal consequences. It is therefore crucial to increase awareness and provide necessary information about SUDEP in both medical and public domains to help families make informed decisions and possibly prevent such tragic incidents.

It's time to end the silence about SUDEP. We urge all stakeholders in public health, including healthcare providers, educators, policymakers, and the media, to bring SUDEP into the open discourse and make this information readily accessible. By providing detailed, clear, and appropriate information on SUDEP, we can help prevent future sudden epilepsy-related deaths. Your signature can help us make this change.
