Incorporate International Mother Language Day into Canadian School Calendar

Incorporate International Mother Language Day into Canadian School Calendar
The Issue
WE are advocating for the inclusion of International Mother Language Day (IMLD) in the Canadian school calendar. This is a day recognized by UNESCO, celebrated annually on February 21st, to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It's an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of mother languages in preserving cultural heritage and promoting global citizenship.
Canada is a multicultural country with over 200 ethnic origins reported by citizens as their mother tongue in the 2016 Census. Despite this rich diversity, our education system lacks a dedicated day to celebrate these languages and many Canadian students remain unaware of its significance. It is crucial that we educate our children about the significance of their mother language and IMLD.
By incorporating this day into our school calendar, we can foster an environment that values diversity and encourages respect for all cultures. We believe that recognizing and celebrating International Mother Language Day in our schools can help promote inclusivity, diversity, and cultural understanding among our students. By acknowledging the significance of mother languages, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their linguistic heritage.
We demand that on 21st February, each school in Canada should organizes special activities, events, and programs to celebrate the diverse mother languages spoken by our students and learn the history of International Mother Language Day .
Let's take this step towards enriching our education system with global perspectives.. Please Sign this petition today to support linguistic diversity in Canada's educational system by including International Mother Language Day in our Canadian school year.
