The Issue

As a follower of Jesus, a mother, an author, and a teacher in New Orleans, LA, I find myself increasingly confronted by a concerning reality. Living in a city that celebrates diverse expressions such as the Gay Easter Parades, I'm left to wonder, where is our Freedom of Religion when it comes to including Jesus in our schools?

American values are deeply rooted in the concepts of justice and equality, principles that are reflected in the prayers that we make and the faith that binds us. Yet, I often find myself stopping my students from dancing and acting like boys, but unable to offer them the solace and guidance that the 'Our Father' prayer can provide.

While the secularisation of schools intends to promote plurality and avoid religious influence and coercion, it is worth noting that the 'Our Father' prayer, taught within the appropriate context and as an optional activity, can serve as a moral compass, promoting values such as forgiveness, humility, and willpower.

According to a Pew Research Center survey in 2019, 65% of American adults describe themselves as Christians. Our faith is significant to us, and we believe that it should not be ostracized from our education system. This prayer, recited by millions every day around the world, should be an option for those who wish to seek solace in it during school hours.

It's not about imposing religion, but rather about providing a choice. Including 'Our Father' in school systems respects and acknowledges the religious beliefs of a considerable number of Americans, without infringing upon the rights of those who wish to abstain.

For ethos of justice, equality and religious freedom that our nation upholds, and for the sake of the many who seek comfort in their faith, we request that the 'Our Father' prayer be included in the curriculum of American schools as an option, rather than a mandate. Let us lead our future generations towards inclusivity and understanding. Sign this petition to express your support.
