Improve Terrible Health Care System of Canada - Mishandling of My Brother's Medical Case

The Issue

Urgent. I have a very serious complaint against the healthcare system of Canada. I will raise my voice against it no matter the consequences, and I expect the support of each one of you. I am an immigrant here. I plan to settle in this country. We, immigrants, come from different countries in search of better life and opportunities and better-governed countries. We immigrants or the citizens of this country are not just products for improving the economy of the country; if we are contributing to the progress of this country, paying taxes, and are ready to call it ours, we deserve proper medical, health, and other important services. Health services are a fundamental human right. Canada is called a developed country, but the healthcare system is something that has shocked me. How are the people surviving here? I am sure each one of us has a story to share about our experience with the healthcare system here in Canada, and if each one of us shares their story in the comments of this petition, there will thousands of stories, if not more. I recently had a horrible experience when it was time for my Brother's Glaucoma eye surgery. The whole last week has been a horrific experience for me, my brother, and all our friends. In the first surgery, the doctor made a mistake while doing the surgery, and there was an unwanted cut on the iris of my brother's eye. The next day we were told about this complication. The doctor left some kind of medical jelly inside to heal the cut in the iris, but the jelly was increasing eye pressure, and he could lose his eyesight totally. This surgery was conducted without anesthesia, that's why the cut happened. My Brother needed another urgent surgery because the jelly was hurting his eye with a risk of total eyesight loss, but the doctor said she was not sure if she could arrange anesthesia, as there is a quota on anesthesia in Surrey Memorial Hospital. No anesthesia in Canada or quota on Anesthesia. Is this what we call developed countries’ developed health care systems that they don’t even provide anesthesia for surgeries? The second surgery had to be done. We had to fight with a whole system which is slow and filled with selfish interests, to get this surgery done. It was an urgent surgery, and it baffles me if anesthesia cannot be arranged for urgent surgery. The doctor said urgent surgery could be done after hours, like 2 am, with anesthesia, so I asked her to do surgery after hours. But she was reluctant to do it later at night as this was Doctor's personal time, which shocked me again that the doctor was keeping their time more important than an urgent case and denying them medical care. What the doctor said after this is going to make you all feel bad. The doctor said 2 am surgery is done when it’s an emergency, and it is not like you busted your eye and all, then we will go for 2 am surgery. The second surgery happened only after my brother continuously experienced nausea. Otherwise, they could have delayed the surgery and sacrificed a patient's vision in this world-class medical system. The healthcare people themselves say the whole system is rotten with internal politics at the Surrey Memorial Hospital and throughout the country. What if his eye is damaged? Who will be responsible? I don't blame the doctor; I blame the healthcare system of the whole of Canada.  Patients are like beggars in this system. You can beg the system, but it stands with a cold face.

Currently, Canada’s population is really controlled; that’s why they are calling in immigrants to help in the progress of this country. If in a controlled or less population, this is the condition of the medical and healthcare system, what will happen when the population increases, and more immigrants come in? If they are not able to handle it now, how are they expected to handle it later? It will be a joke with this medical system. It’s a real pity to see the ignorance of the government and the ones who call themselves authorities.

Getting a second opinion for him is another difficult task. The doctor's notes are being delayed from being sent to another doctor or to be sent to us; the previous ophthalmologist doctor referred us to this current doctor, and the previous ophthalmologist doctor denied meeting us to give a second opinion before the second surgery or refer us to another doctor; the doctor's office said he could not help with this. Doctors are there to help us, not to give us these cold answers when there is an urgent situation, at least from the patient's point of view, who can lose his eyesight. There is no post-care after surgery as the doctor is unavailable after 4 pm. Call 811, and they will define whether it's an emergency or not; and emergency is only when you are dying; eyesight loss is not an emergency. I have heard of many cases where the person with a fracture or extreme kidney stone pain reached ER and had to wait around 24 hours to get the treatment. They will not even provide any medicine or first aid to ease the pain when the patient is waiting. What is this?

Reach the emergency hospital. They will keep you waiting for hours before you are treated. Unless a person is dying, nothing else is an emergency here. Charge some money but improve this healthcare system soon, very soon.

Another incident-I went to a walk-in clinic around 7 am. I was shocked to see patients standing outside (not even allowed inside the clinic while they wait) in line in the freezing weather of December, which defines the situation of healthcare here. After a while, we were already told that only the first 50 patients they accepted, and after that, no more patients. We were told to come as early as 6.30 am the next day to stand in line for our turns. Imagine a person with severe cold symptoms; a person who is sick will come and stand outside in the cold at 6 am. Will his situation not worsen? Then I went to another walk-in clinic named urgent care clinic, and to my bitter shock, they said they only accept only 10 walk-ins, and they decide for you if your problem is urgent or not. And they give you a cold-hearted denial as an answer. How inhuman is that? A person should be able to see the doctor the same day, no matter how small the medical problem is. At least till 8 pm, doctors and clinics should be open and available. No quota on how many patients you can see. How and why are the people who work in these clinics, like doctors and nurses, ok with this system and are not taking strong steps to change it? It's just not about whether you did your duty, got your salary, and that's it. It is beyond just duty; it is about humanity. You who work at hospitals and clinics know the reality and ground situation, and you people be the first ones to fight it vigorously. What if one of your family members needs medical care or is struggling to find basic health care or even a doctor? We are new here as immigrants, and it is super difficult to find a family doctor or to reach a doctor for any medical issues. What kind of system is this? It does not make any sense. It is not at all an intelligent system. Why are the people voting for the governments that are not changing anything about it?

First of all, to reach a doctor here is like a jackpot; to find a family doctor is also a big lottery win. There should be a celebration if you are able to find a family doctor.  Secondly, they give you appointments so late that either till that time your problem will increase and worsen or it will go away on its own. Obtaining a referral for a specialist or getting a second opinion in itself is a huge task. Doctors don't give any direct point of contact, at least like an email, where a person can get quick advice from their regular doctor before getting tensed or calling it an emergency. After surgery, there is no post-care option. You can call the doctor's office who did the surgery, but it closes after 4-5 pm. The receptionist on the call cannot advise anything; there is no direct point of contact for the doctor. I am shocked at this system. Why this country's citizens and residents have not raised this issue is really strange. Do we have to plan to become ill? Illness just happens, and as soon it is caught, the better the chances of recovery. How can this lazy system be called a developed health care system of a developed country? Walmart is open till 11 pm, but Doctor's see only 1st 50 patients and close till 4 pm. What Irony.

I am all for charging some money for medical services from the patient and some from medical insurance, but this system cannot be kept like this just because it is free. I am sure many people will agree to pay some amount to get better healthcare. Medical services can be kept free for people below a certain income. As far as these medical services remain free on MSP, I don't expect things to change. Some reasonable charges are acceptable for obtaining better health care. The private sector has to be allowed in the healthcare system, and competition needs to be introduced; only then healthcare system will improve. This monopoly over the healthcare system to fulfill the private interests of unions and other authorities involved cannot be tolerated anymore.

I raise my voice to the government of Canada, the Health Minister, and residents of Canada for an urgent improvement in healthcare services, and I expect people who understand and empathize with this situation to stand by this cause and share and sign this petition and make it reach as many people as possible. This is a cause of concern for each of us; please do what is needed and see the health and medical services change for the better. Thank you to everyone for their contribution to this petition.

Look at a news article from Sakstoday.ca, it accurately describes the state of the health care system, and apparently, it’s because of the politics of unions and other interests who want to keep its monopoly for their own selfish interests. It makes me so sad to see this condition of humanity where people can keep selfish interests of no real value, like money and politics, and power above other human beings well being and knowingly harm them - Please look at this article below -

Recent Updates((I will update it as the events occur with us) - We are knocking on different doors mentioned below, asking for medical help from doctors and this system, we are asking for help like beggars, but still no help is being provided. You guys must be thinking that these guys can start seeing a second doctor who is an eye specialist or glaucoma specialist, but here are more shocking revelations we discovered. You cannot go directly to a specialist; you will have to get referred to by your current doctor (the current doctor who did the surgery, who has messed up our case, who is not providing any answers, who did not inform us of the risks before the surgery, who did not inform that there will no anesthesia while doing surgery), or get referred from a walk-in clinic(where a patient has to stand in line at 6.30 am) or from the doctor who originally referred you to Glaucoma specialist(who denied to see us and give any advice before the second surgery). And they are asking my brother (who is on the verge of losing his vision in his right eye) to try walk-in clinics and get doctor notes from here or there. They are making a patient who is under a lot of stress to take more stress to fight for this, and then they will be able to refer him to a second specialist doctor. He is healing from his surgery and cannot run to fulfill the tasks you need to do for him. Keep waiting till you lose your eyesight; then they will come into action, maybe not even then. We called 811, and after putting us on wait for an hour and another hour to take all the details of the case, they said we could not refer you to a second specialist. We were advised to go to ER. After reaching ER, waiting for 2 hours, and after the checkup, the doctor said, your vision will worsen than where it was before the surgery due to complications, but we also cannot refer you to another specialist. A person should be able to consult any doctor or any specialist as he wishes without needing permission from all these doctors who deny helping in any way. They just say this is how it is; there is no answer we can give you. It shocks me to my core.
We are not dialing 911 because we don’t need urgent surgery; all the damage has already been done. We just need a new doctor who is a Glaucoma specialist for our future consultations as we have lost all confidence in the current doctor and almost lost our eyesight (eyesight currently is at 0% vision in the right eye, it will be seen in the coming weeks if the vision comes back or not), and current Doctor is not answering our questions in a proper manner at all and not providing any information or timeline as to whether vision will revive or not, in how many days we can know something, nothing is being answered. The current doctor has not provided doctor notes till now, and the walk-in clinic doctor says they cannot refer without doctor notes. We need to see a new doctor - such a simple demand is not being fulfilled of a patient at risk of losing his vision, patient in-stress, and wants to get some clear answers. God, oh God, what world are we living in? Common sense has been thrown away, and all these rules/policies that are inhumane are being enforced. Please help us, God. Please help us, people, in changing this situation for the betterment of each one of us.
