Improve Safety, Security and Upgrade Facilities at Braye Park, Waratah West NSW

The issue

To: The Newcastle City Council and Mayor Ross Kerridge

We, the undersigned, request immediate attention and action from the Newcastle City Council regarding the condition, safety, and maintenance of Braye Park. This park holds incredible potential as a scenic and central green space with nearly 360-degree views of Newcastle and the coastline. However, it has suffered from years of neglect, leading to various community concerns, including safety issues and inadequate facilities for families and residents.

KEY ISSUES:

Security Concerns:
Braye Park has developed a longstanding reputation associated with inappropriate behaviour, posing safety risks to community members. Numerous accounts from local residents indicate disturbing and highly unacceptable encounters, including witnessing inappropriate sexual activity and other behaviours that make the park uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Discussions on platforms like Reddit highlight these concerns:
"A serious question about Braye Park"
"Braye Park"
"What's the deal with Braye Park?"
"Braye Park Geography Assignment"

Lack of Proper Maintenance and Landscaping:
Unlike many well-maintained green spaces in Newcastle, Braye Park suffers from overgrown weeds, unkempt pathways, and inadequate grassy areas, limiting its appeal and functionality as a recreational area. The presence of litter, including discarded condoms and drug paraphernalia, further deters families and community members from visiting and enjoying the park.

Encampment Issues:
There is a known shanty town hidden within the back area of the park, raising additional safety concerns and contributing to the poor image of this green space.

PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS:

Enhanced Security Measures:

  • Implement security measures, such as regular patrols, installation of security cameras or a gate on the park's access road to be locked overnight, restricting vehicle access during late hours to prevent undesirable activities.

Landscaping Redevelopment:

Undertake a full redevelopment of Braye Park’s landscaping, including establishing clean and safe grassy areas, planting native flora, and creating defined walking trails and scenic lookouts.

Maintenance Upgrades:
Introduce a structured maintenance plan to ensure regular upkeep, including litter removal and landscaping management, to keep Braye Park inviting for all community members.

Accessibility Enhancements:

Develop wheelchair-accessible pathways and facilities to ensure inclusivity, benefiting patients and staff from the nearby Calvary Mater Hospital, particularly those in the oncology, hospice, and older persons' mental health units.

Rationale:

Braye Park’s potential as a prime recreational space has yet to be realised due to these issues. The park’s location near the Calvary Mater Hospital also provides an opportunity for patients, staff, and local residents to benefit from a safe, serene outdoor space. Improving Braye Park will not only enhance community well-being but also reflect positively on Newcastle’s commitment to maintaining accessible, safe, and clean green spaces for all residents.

Community Engagement:

Community members have expressed concerns through various channels, including local social media groups and community forums, highlighting the need for significant improvements. Reports from these sources indicate a strong community desire for Newcastle City Council to prioritise the redevelopment of Braye Park. Notably, discussions on Reddit have brought attention to safety issues and the park's current state.

Desired Outcomes:

We urge Newcastle City Council to:

  1. Allocate funds for Braye Park’s comprehensive redevelopment.
  2. Conduct feasibility studies to explore potential upgrades and security implementations.
  3. Initiate consultations with the community to gather feedback and ensure the park meets local needs.

Your support in transforming Braye Park into a welcoming and safe environment is essential for the Newcastle community. By signing this petition, we, the undersigned, express our strong commitment to seeing Braye Park restored and revitalised for future generations.
