A large number of primary school learners from Eikestad and Rhenish use the pedestrian crossing in Van Reede Rd to get to and from school everyday. But due to its poor design, the crossing is not safe. In the latest of a long list of incidents, a car drove through the crossing despite the light being red and collided with a 10-year old child.

Throughout town, important pedestrian crossings are raised. This significantly enhances their safety by forcing drivers to slow down and pay attention to pedestrians and cyclists.

This petition aims to urge Stellenbosch Municipality to prioritize the immediate elevation of the Van Reede Rd pedestrian crossing. This will significantly improve its safety and encourage more children to walk and cycle to school.
