Improve policy on special needs nappies for disabled children

The Issue

Thousands of families with disabled children across the UK face unnecessary struggles due to an inadequate supply of special needs nappies provided through current policies. These policies often fail to accommodate the unique and varied needs of each child, leaving parents and caregivers to bear the financial and emotional burdens of obtaining enough nappies to maintain their children’s comfort and dignity.

Consider the story of a seven-year-old boy who bravely battles a host of medical challenges, including cerebral palsy, a shrinking cerebellum, ventricularmegaly, global development delay, autism, adrenal deficiency, epilepsy, asthma, intestinal failure, short bowel syndrome, visual impairment, and sensory processing disorder. Additionally, he relies on a gastrostomy and central line for nutrition, is TPN dependent, and frequently loses over a litre of bowel fluid in one sitting. This child’s health conditions clearly demand a higher quantity of special needs nappies than is currently allowed by existing policies.

This is not just the story of one child. Many parents are confronted with the stark reality that they must choose between compromising their child’s health and well-being or facing substantial out-of-pocket expenses to cover these essential supplies. Each child is uniquely different, and their needs should be assessed individually to ensure their dignity and comfort are prioritised.

We call upon [relevant governing body or authority] to review and amend the policies concerning the provision of special needs nappies. By increasing the allocation based on individual child assessments rather than a one-size-fits-all policy, we can alleviate the undue burdens placed on families and cultivate an environment of care and support.

Join us in advocating for these necessary changes to improve the lives of disabled children and their families. Sign this petition to urge policymakers to create a fairer, more equitable system where every child’s health and comfort are safeguarded.
