Improve News Literacy
The issue
Misinformation in the media is when influencers and authority figures in the media give out incorrect information or falsely advertise something to do with what they are talking about.
Our solution would be to introduce a program into the current school curriculum that would provide you with the resources to correctly assess the information you receive, and successfully interpret misinformation. It would target students in years 6-8, spanning over 1-2 terms. It would include debates and simulations to aid in the teaching. Throughout this process, students would learn about bias, what sources to trust and when to trust said sources.
Successful change would involve less harmful incidents resulting from false information, the average person would make wiser decisions in their day-today life, less false information being spread in the media since the audience would decrease, and more personal freedom with people realising that much of the propaganda and influences on the media are meant to manipulate you and have false information.
We hope that you can help us out by signing our petition to help our program get underway in local schools to hopefully be put into action on a state-wide scale. This will happen because when the petition is taken to the state government because with each signature that we gain, the chance of the petition being considered increases as it shows that this is an issue that a vast proportion of the public care about.
Thank you for your help in making this much needed change.
