Improve housing standards in Basildon council housing
Improve housing standards in Basildon council housing
The Issue

These photos are current state of how Basildon Council have left a mum and two children, leaks from a roof and her whole home is riddled with maggots, because they failed to carry out the works under health and safety, turning off her electricity, whilst they threw her into a temporary accommodation for nine weeks!!
I'm writing this petition to raise awareness for the families in Basildon who rely on council housing, which should be a safe haven for us all. Unfortunately, the current state of these homes is far from safe. We're constantly faced with hazardous conditions that put our families at risk every day. From mould-infested walls that exacerbate asthma to faulty electrical systems, leaks and poorly maintained heating systems that threaten our well-being, the safety of our homes is compromised.
These housing conditions are a genuine health and safety concern for any family, let alone those with children, the elderly, or individuals with health issues who are even more vulnerable. The council's inaction and the slow pace of improvements leave us living in fear of avoidable accidents or illnesses, which is unacceptable in 2026.
Real and actionable changes are needed immediately. We urge Basildon Council to prioritize the safety of council homes as a matter of urgency. There needs to be a comprehensive review of all housing conditions, with immediate mandatory inspections to identify the most hazardous properties. Following these, a long-term plan for renovations and improvements should be implemented with clear timeframes and accountability measures for completion. Moreover, a hotline should be established to report emergencies or urgent repairs without delay.
In addition to action plans, funding must be allocated effectively. We call for increased transparency in how council resources are dedicated to maintaining homes, ensuring that taxpayer money is used wisely to benefit the community and target immediate health and safety risks.
Every family deserves to feel secure in their own home. The lack of attention to these crucial issues has gone on for far too long. By signing this petition, you support our call for drastic improvements, urging Basildon Council to uphold their responsibility to provide safe, livable housing for all residents. Together, we can push for the changes our community so desperately needs. Please sign and support our cause.
