Just recently, I was called in to aid a family whose elderly relative's home – a property managed by Clarion Housing – was suffering from an acute cockroach infestation confined to just the kitchen. What was particularly distressing about this situation was that the elderly resident was in end-of-life care. Despite the severity of the matter, Clarion Housing provided no immediate assistance beyond a promise that pest control would arrive in two weeks. No alternative accommodations or temporary solutions were offered to this vulnerable family, leaving them feeling helpless and overwhelmed.

This isn't an isolated incident; it's a pattern repeated across housing associations and councils that are meant to serve the community. Families with children, the elderly, and other vulnerable residents are routinely left waiting for urgent and necessary interventions. Rapid response measures must be developed to ensure these cases are addressed promptly.

We propose the implementation of emergency protocols within housing associations and councils to handle these urgent cases efficiently. This includes shorter response times for pest control, emergency repair teams ready to step in, and temporary accommodations being provided when homes become uninhabitable. Additionally, training employees to recognize and prioritize these urgent cases will hugely improve the current system, ensuring no family is left in a precarious situation.

The councils and housing associations must acknowledge these failings and work towards a more compassionate, effective service that truly cares for its residents. We demand that our local authorities, starting with those in the regions serviced by Clarion Housing, take immediate steps to revise their protocols.
