A trip to Egypt left us heartbroken and deeply concerned. Recently, my friends and I bore direct witness to the widespread cruelty inflicted on animals in the country. Such heartbreaking scenes are not isolated incidents but form part of a larger, troubling picture.

According to reports by international animal rights organizations, animal welfare in Egypt has remained a low-priority issue. Animals, particularly those used in the tourism industry, are frequently subjected to poor living conditions and harsh treatment (source: World Animal Protection). Stray animals, too, lead lives mired in distress and indifference.

Given the scale and gross nature of the issue, it's critically important for any humane society to urgently address such shortcomings. The people of Egypt must request their government to reformulate and enforce stricter animal welfare laws.

The "Animal Welfare Bill" raised in the Egyptian Parliament in 2018 was a constructive start, but did not result in a sustainable improvement in the lives of animals in Egypt without sufficient enforcement (source: Egypt Independent). The need of the hour is rigorous implementation of laws, along with establishing an ethos which respects and defends animal rights.
