Naturestrips under threat in draft policy by Maribyrnong City Council
Council is in the middle of community consultation about their draft Naturestrip Landscape Policy & Guidelines, with feedback closing on 24th March. We believe that the draft policy does not actively promote a culture of planting and relies too heavily on compliance and consequent punitive action. Stop threat of $1000 per day fine for Seddon resident with a verge garden
Thank you everyone for signing this petition and making your voices heard. Council will no longer be fining the resident for their nature strip and hedge. The issue of a permit is yet to be negotiated, and for this reason we encourage you to continue signing and sharing this petition.
This is an important test case, as Council will be discussing a new nature strip policy early in the new year, and the Green Guerrillas are keen to ensure that this policy allows residents to plant on their nature strip without the need for a permit, within certain guidelines. This is the case in numerous local government areas in Melbourne and Australia-wide.
Original Petition
Following a complaint, a resident in Hotham Street Seddon has been issued a Council notice demanding the removal of all plants from the nature strip and the hedge along the fence line, an application for a permit to re-plant the garden, and the threat of a $1000 fine per day for failure to comply.
The resident is a horticulturalist who has nurtured the verge garden for over 30 years and receives frequent compliments about the garden from locals.
Council's punitive approach threatens all residents who have planted trees, shrubs and hedges on their nature strip, and should not be happening in the context of Council's Nature Strip Policy being in review and subject to a decision early next year.
The Green Guerrillas have been working with Council as part of the Nature Strip Policy review, aiming to develop a policy which encourages urban greening, community well-being and biodiversity, which is exactly what this resident has been doing for 30 years.
