The Issue

As a student in Ontario, I believe every child in this province deserves an equal education, regardless of their background. Sadly, this belief is not the reality for many Indigenous students. I am deeply concerned when I see statistics showing that Indigenous students are graduating at rates nearly 30 per cent lower than their non-Indigenous peers. It is disheartening to realize that this stark disparity exists despite the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) education-related Calls to Action being published over a decade ago.

The TRC's Calls to Action are a direct result of careful consideration, reflecting the vital changes needed to address systemic issues and historical injustices faced by Indigenous communities in Canada. Implementing these actions is crucial to ensuring a fair, comprehensive, and culturally respectful education system for Indigenous students, one that honours their heritage and provides opportunities for success.

Unfortunately, these Calls to Action remain largely unfulfilled in Ontario. This ongoing neglect not only perpetuates existing inequities but actively causes harm to Indigenous students, impeding their ability to thrive academically and personally.

The evidence is clear: a comprehensive approach to education that includes the history, cultures, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples enriches all students' learning experiences and fosters mutual respect and understanding. The failure to incorporate these vital elements into the education system exacerbates the challenges faced by Indigenous students and communities, leading to lifelong disparities.

We urge the Ontario government to prioritize the implementation of the TRC’s education-related Calls to Action without further delay. This includes ensuring that educational curriculum reflects Indigenous history and perspectives accurately, adequately funding initiatives that support Indigenous student success, and providing professional development for educators on relevant cultural competencies.

By taking decisive action now, we can honor the TRC's legacy, foster reconciliation, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape for all students. Join me in calling on the Ontario government to fulfill its promises to Indigenous students and communities by signing this petition today.
