Implement tighter ethical breeding regulations on flat-faced dogs

Brachycephalic breeds, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs, are increasingly popular because of their distinctive looks and charming characters. Yet, behind those adorable faces lies a harsh reality: these dogs often endure serious health issues like respiratory difficulties, eye problems, and heat intolerance. The physical structure that gives them their characteristic "cute" appearance is the very reason why they suffer.
The average lifespan of French bulldogs is 4.6, whilst British bulldogs 5.8, compared to the healthy lifespan of 12 years other canine breeds experience. These flat-faced dogs require the BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) surgery from 8-24 months old, otherwise the debilitating genetic medical issues will gradually affect the livelihood of the animal, and lead to an early passing.
The solution is clear—stricter regulations need to be put in place to govern the breeding of flat-faced dogs. This includes mandatory health tests and certifications for breeding individuals, raising the standards for what is considered ethical breeding, and providing potential owners with a better understanding of the responsibility they take on.
Western Australia completely lacks any legislation to effectively protect these breeds, in fact, their last law pertaining to canines was passed in 1976.
It's time to stop prioritising 'aesthetic' traits like shorter tails, compressed faces, and bulging eyes, and remember our furry friends livelihood that are often negatively impacted by selfish breeders.
Organisations like the RSPCA and the Australian Vet Association have long advocated for such changes, and it's time for WAs lawmakers to heed their calls. Enacting these regulations could drastically reduce the health problems suffered by these wonderful dogs and ensure that future generations are able to live healthier, happier lives.
