We are a group of deeply concerned parents in Midtown, urgently wishing to address the escalating safety risks surrounding the intersection of Heath and Yonge. Over time, this intersection has increasingly become a hotspot for chaos and near-accidents, putting the lives of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists at risk.  

The current two-phase traffic light system has proven inadequate in maintaining order and ensuring safety. Drivers often find themselves in precarious situations, uncertain about right-of-way rules in the eastbound and westbound lanes. Far too often we see dangerous maneuvers within the intersection, encroachments into pedestrian crosswalks, gridlock, and a backlog of cars along either side of Heath.

As parents of students attending Deer Park Jr and Sr Public School, we are particularly alarmed by the risks faced by pedestrians, especially our children, who should feel secure when crossing the street.

Therefore, we propose an immediate transition to a three-phase traffic light system at this intersection. This three-phase system would allocate separate green signal phases for eastbound and westbound traffic. By implementing this change we should experience:

1. Improved Right-of-Way Clarity
2. Enhanced Pedestrian Safety
3. Reduced Conflict Points 
4. Optimized Traffic Flow
