The Issue

As an avid film buff and aspiring film worker, the moviegoing experience has always been near and dear to my heart. It's a thrilling, wonderful experience that's tailor-made for making cherished memories, whether you go on your own or with friends and family.

But in an era where people are gradually being conditioned to wait until new releases are available to watch at home, at the expense of supporting new releases that were tailor-made to be experienced on the big screen, it's never been more vital that the sanctity of the moviegoing experience be preserved and maintained. Something that the major cinema chains are failing to do enough of.

The recent trend of rowdy, disruptive audiences at screenings of Minecraft has made this all too evident. These incidents have involved inconsiderate patrons throwing concessions all over the theater, tossing objects at others and potentially causing injury, and even bringing actual livestock into the theater (I'm not making that up, I swear), to the point where police have had to intervene. On top of all that, these happenings have been captured and posted to social media for all to see, clearly for the sake of just that: clout-chasing at the expense of others just trying to actually watch a movie.

This is BEYOND unacceptable, and theaters aren't doing enough to condemn it.

I'm calling on the major cinema chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal, etc.) to take greater action to enforce stricter zero-tolerance policies to prevent this kind of reckless behavior, including:

  • Increased monitoring of auditoriums, with additional ushers to keep crowds in check and on their best behavior.
  • Stronger bans on cellphone usage during the film, particularly to film the screen for the sake of social media content.
  • Stricter consequences for extremely disruptive patrons.

Basic movie theater etiquette is showing a truly alarming decline, and it's time enough was enough.
