Today, I witnessed something truly unsettling. While out on a walk, I saw a person with their dog, and the poor creature was desperately trying to move onto grass and into the shade, as the concrete beneath its paws was clearly scorching. In that moment, it was clear that while humans can speak up about discomfort, dogs rely on us to protect them, especially in situations they can't verbalize themselves. With Queensland's intense heat, the risks are grave — hot pavement can cause severe burns and even lead to heatstroke in mere minutes.

In Queensland, the summer sun is merciless. Concrete, bitumen, and other paved surfaces absorb and radiate heat, reaching temperatures that can gravely harm our beloved pets. Dogs’ paw pads are as sensitive as the skin on our hands and feet, and yet, every summer, countless dogs suffer from serious, often preventable injuries due to extreme surface heat. Unlike humans, dogs cannot regulate their body temperature efficiently, putting them at an even greater risk of potentially fatal heat stress.

This is happening around us every day. Helpless dogs are seen trying to escape the burning pavement's relentless heat. The signs are clear — dogs panting heavily, seeking shade, or refusing to walk further. Yet, because they can't 'tell' us, many pet owners might unknowingly walk their dogs at high-risk times, not realizing the danger underfoot.

Therefore, we urgently call upon local councils and government authorities in Queensland to enact stronger protections for dogs against extreme heat during the summer months. This could include public awareness campaigns about the dangers of hot pavement, restrictions on walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day, and the installation of shaded paths and dog-friendly cooling stations in public areas. By taking these steps, we ensure the safety and wellbeing of our furry companions.

Please lend your voice to this cause. Sign this petition to help safeguard dogs from the oppressive heat of Queensland summers and ensure their comfortable, injury-free enjoyment of outdoor spaces.
