On the evening of 25 May 2025, a serious road traffic accident occurred on Clifton Lane, narrowly avoiding a major tragedy. A car carrying a group of young individuals was reportedly overtaking other vehicles at high speed while approaching a bend. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which struck both a lamppost and a telegraph pole before coming to a halt just outside a residential property. The car narrowly missed the home’s front gates, highlighting the potential for far more severe consequences. Emergency services were called to the scene, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Statistics from local traffic monitoring have shown a concerning rise in the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limits in residential areas. According to the Department for Transport, pedestrian fatalities rise by 600% when vehicles exceed 30 mph. This stark statistic highlights the potential dangers that unchecked speeding poses to our community members.

Children walking to nearby James Peacock Infant and Nursery School and St. Peter's Junior School are at increased risk, especially during busy school run times. Additionally, the elderly and those with disabilities are hurt the most, as they might not be able to react quickly to avoid fast-approaching vehicles.

Implementing speed calming measures, such as speed bumps, signage, and enhanced road markings, can significantly reduce the speed of vehicles and improve the safety and quality of life for all Clifton Lane users.
