Implement Solar-Powered Lights Along the Regnart Creek Trail

The Issue

Studies show that well-lit public trails can increase their use by up to 34%, support healthier communities, enhance safety, and promote ecological sustainability.

For our school Civic Engagement Project, our group is dedicated to improving an aspect of the community environment and experience. As we frequently use the Regnart Creek Trail, we’ve noticed that the absence of lighting infrastructure makes the trail unsafe and almost impossible to navigate (especially during the winter). This discourages the use of biking or walking at the end of a work-day or extended school day (with after-school activities) and contributes to traffic and pollution.

To address this issue, our group proposes to establish 23 solar-powered lights, one every three houses, along the trail. Because the trail’s far proximity to neighboring houses, the lights are far enough to avoid disturbing residents of these houses. The new lights will also not exceed 2700 Kelvin (based on Cupertino regulations) and be warm to not create any light pollution. Overall, there will be minimal downside for residents along the trail.

If you, like us, want to feel safe using the Regnart Creek Trail after dusk, we need your support. Let's shed some light on this issue; sign this petition today and make our trail safe and usable at all hours.
