Joseph "J.R." Fruen is a third-generation resident of Cupertino, California, and currently serves on the Cupertino City Council. He made history in 2022 by becoming the city's first openly gay council member. Fruen's educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in European Studies, German, and a minor in Italian from UCLA, where he graduated summa cum laude. He also holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Santa Clara University School of Law and has been practicing law since 2015. Elected in 2022, Fruen's campaign emphasized transparency, housing solutions, traffic mitigation, and supporting local schools. He served as Vice Mayor in 2024. Fruen is involved with various regional boards, including the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Santa Clara County Library District Joint Powers Authority.
