Families For Safe Streets at Cupertino Elementary School

Families For Safe Streets at Cupertino Elementary School
The Issue
As parents of Faria students, we oppose a property developer building a massive 5-story, 20-unit building just 8 houses away from Faria Elementary School (see savecupertino.org for more details on the building). This is a dangerous and irresponsible proposal that will put our children's safety at risk due to the increased density of road traffic hundreds of feet away from school.
Scofield Drive, the main route to school, is a narrow street with one lane of traffic in each direction. On an average school day there are about 200 pedestrian students and over 300 cars on Scofield Dr every morning and afternoon, causing a lengthy backlog of cars down the street. To complicate the situation, there are no sidewalks on Scofield Drive between DeAnza and Western, forcing pedestrians to walk along the road with cars. This is even more dangerous, as cars constantly cross the pedestrian traffic to park and drop off children.
If this 5-story, 20 unit building is permitted, it will make the traffic situation all the more severe and dangerous for schoolchildren. The multi-year construction alone will add chaos to the school traffic, and the air pollution will pose a risk to school children with asthma or other respiratory conditions. If the building is completed and 20 families move in, that single building will double the number of cars on that side of Scofield.
We understand the need for more housing, but this is not the right location. Building a high-density complex on a narrow street near a school without adequate pedestrian infrastructure is a recipe for disaster. We must protect our children's well-being and ensure they can walk to school safely. If the City permits this development, it will expose generation after generation of kids to traffic and air pollution and keep their parents in a constant state of anxiety. Please sign the petition to help us oppose this housing development.
